Period Wheelchair designed by President Roosevelt

President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) designed and used customized wheelchairs, often converting sturdy kitchen chairs by cutting down the legs and adding large wheels. These custom chairs were designed for mobility within the White House and to blend in as furniture, allowing him to manage his polio-related paralysis discreetly, as he hid the severity of his condition from the public.
