The Monaural Stethoscope
Laennec produced his wooden stethoscope in 1819. This brought about a great improvement in diagnostic techniques. During the course of the remainder of the century, there were many variations on the monaural stethoscope, some more successful than others. Different materials were tried. Ebony and fruitwoods were popular. Ivory, silver and paper Mache were also used.
